Running Our RV Air Conditioner Off Batteries: What a Soft Start Actually Does

We do not carry a generator. We live full-time in a Brinkley Model Z 3515 with about 2,770 watts of solar on the roof and six SOK 24V 100Ah lithium batteries underneath it, and on a hot afternoon in Florida the air conditioner runs off that bank like we are plugged into a pedestal.

People assume the batteries are what make that possible. They are part of it. The part nobody mentions until they hit it is a device the size of a paperback bolted next to the AC unit, and without it the whole plan falls apart.

The problem is the first half second

An air conditioner compressor does not ease into it. At the moment it kicks on it pulls what is called locked rotor amperage, a surge several times higher than what it draws once it is running. A rooftop RV air conditioner might settle at 12 or 13 amps and spike to somewhere north of 50 for a fraction of a second on startup.

Shore power shrugs that off. A 30 or 50 amp pedestal has more than enough behind it to absorb a spike that brief. An inverter does not have that luxury. It has a hard ceiling, and when the surge crosses it the inverter protects itself and shuts down. You get a click, a beep, and no cold air.

That is the actual reason "can I run my AC off batteries" gets answered with "no" so often. It is rarely about the battery bank being too small. It is about that first half second.

What a soft starter does

A soft start controls how the compressor comes up to speed instead of letting it slam on. It ramps the motor, which flattens the spike into something an inverter can handle. The running draw afterward is unchanged, because a soft start does not make the air conditioner more efficient and does not make it use less power over an afternoon. It changes the shape of the startup, and that is the whole job.

Where it sits in our system

The soft start is one piece of a stack that has to work together, so it is worth seeing where it lands.

Two Victron MultiPlus 3000VA inverter/chargers turn battery power into household power. Running two is what lets us pull the air conditioner and the air fryer at the same time instead of picking one. Behind them is the SOK bank, and above them the RICH SOLAR panels that refill it every morning. The soft start does not care about any of that. It sits at the air conditioner and solves one problem. But if you are pricing a system to run AC off-grid, budget for it in the same breath as the inverter, because a bank big enough to run the compressor is still a bank that cannot start it.

What it does not fix

Two honest limits, because we have run into both.

It does not create power. Air conditioning is the heaviest thing in the rig and it runs for hours, not minutes. On our 15-day boondocking challenge we parked in shade, the panels never got a real day of sun, and we watched the bank drain lower every morning until we borrowed a generator to dig out. That whole scramble is in our stuck-without-power post, and the lesson had nothing to do with the compressor. The best startup device in the world does not help if nothing is refilling the batteries.

It also does not turn a small inverter into a big one. A soft start lowers the bar the inverter has to clear. It does not remove the bar. If your inverter is undersized for the running load, smoothing the surge just moves where it fails.

Would we buy it again

We did not choose it in the sense of shopping for one. It came as part of a designed system, which is the honest answer and also the recommendation: if running the air conditioner off batteries is part of what you want, have someone spec the whole chain rather than buying pieces and hoping they cooperate.
