Black Hawk Creek RV Park, Rapid City: Our Base for the Black Hills

  • Published on

Quick facts

  • Where: Black Hawk Creek RV Park & Cabins, 6790 N. Deadwood Avenue, Rapid City, South Dakota. It's just north of the city, off I-90 at exit 52 or 55.
  • Cost: about $78 a night before tax (2026).
  • Type: private RV park with cabins.
  • Our site: a 50-amp, full-hookup pull-through. Not too tight.
  • Starlink: worked great.
  • Cell: worked too.
  • Packages: yes, but they land in an unattended room near the entrance (more below).
  • When we stayed: almost two weeks, late July into early August 2026.

We wanted one spot where we could park for a while, work a lot of hours, and still drive out to everything in the Black Hills on the days off. There are places to see all over that area, and this park sits close enough to Rapid City to reach all of them.

Getting in

Check in at the office and pick up your map. The roads through the park are a little tight. When we arrived, some neighbors were working on their trucks and had them partly in the road. There are also some huge boulders placed to protect the power equipment, so watch for those as you turn. We got in fine; just take it slowly.

The site

Our pull-through wasn't too tight, with 50-amp power and full hookups. Starlink worked great and so did our phones, which mattered because we were working most days.

Getting packages

Mail and packages don't go to the main office. They're dropped in a small building near the entrance, all in one pile, with nobody watching it. You go in and dig for your own. We did get our packages, but it runs on the honor system, so pick yours up quickly.

The power, twice

At the start, Nathan forgot to turn on our power at the pedestal, so we ran on our batteries without noticing. Later in the stay, a storm rolled through and knocked out the campground's power for an evening. It was warm, and we could hear neighbors running generators to keep their air conditioners going. Our batteries carried us until the power came back. If you have solar and a battery bank, a short outage like that is a non-event.

What we did from here

Sylvan Lake seen from above, ringed by granite boulders and pine forest in Custer State Park The Avenue of Flags at Mount Rushmore in low evening sun, with only a handful of visitors

Would we stay again?

Yes, as a base. Full hookups, a pull-through, good internet, and the whole Black Hills within driving distance. Before this we boondocked on the Badlands rim, and after it we headed west toward Yellowstone and Red Rock RV Park.
