Quick facts
- Where: Gunter Hill Campground, an Army Corps of Engineers campground near Montgomery, Alabama. We were in the Catoma loop.
- Cost: $30 a night. Five nights came to $150 on Recreation.gov (2025).
- Hookups: full hookups at our site.
- Our site: a back-in.
- Starlink: hard. There are trees everywhere. We made it work with a 100-foot cable (more below).
- Cell: a little signal.
- When we stayed: five nights, May 26 to 31, 2025, right after Eastbank on Lake Seminole.
Gunter Hill is a pretty, wooded park, and that's exactly what made it hard for us. We work on Starlink, and this campground has so many trees that finding a site with open sky to the north was close to impossible.
The 100-foot Starlink cable
Nathan saw the tree cover on the map before we went and bought a 100-foot Starlink cable ahead of time. At the site we ran it from the pantry, through the utility bay next to the tank valves, down under the rig, and all the way to the end of the driveway, where the dish could see enough sky. That's what kept us online.
If you work from the road and you're booking here, plan for the trees. Look at the map for the most open site you can find, and bring a long cable. We go into the whole setup in how we use Starlink in the RV.
Getting in
Our site was a back-in, and with all the trees it was a challenge, but we got in.
The laundry beetles
The laundry room was fine, except for the large flying beetles. At night they'd fly right at you while you were inside, so we did our laundry fast.
Around the park
We walked around the park a lot, and on one walk we found our first snake of RV life, right at the edge of the path. Watch where you step.
There's a playground if you have kids. Our neighbors were nice. It rained a lot while we were there, and the city is a bit of a drive away, but we headed into town to refuel without any trouble.
Would we stay again?
It's a nice, quiet park at a good price. We'd go back with the long Starlink cable packed, ready for the trees. From here we drove north to Ditto Landing in Huntsville, where there wasn't a tree in sight.
